Retraits REER / FERR

RRSP et RRIF withdrawal calculator for Canada

The question in retirement is not simply how much is in an RRSP. It is how et when that money should become taxable income while coordinating CPP, OAS, TFSA et non-registered savings.

À retenir

RRSP withdrawals are generally included in taxable income. RRSPs must mature by the end of the year the annuitant turns 71, et RRIFs then have prescribed minimum withdrawals. A good drawdown plan considers today’s tax rate et future forced income together.

A RRIF has an annual minimum payment based on age et the value of the RRIF at the beginning of the year. For standard post-1992 RRIFs, the prescribed factor is 5.28% at age 71, 5.40% at 72, 5.53% at 73 et rises with age. The exact factor should be verified against CRA’s current prescribed-factor table.

Where permitted et elected when the RRIF is established, the minimum may be based on a younger spouse or common-law partner’s age. This can reduce required withdrawals.

Deferring every RRSP dollar as long as possible can create a large RRIF balance et supérieure mandatory taxable withdrawals later. In some plans, taking controlled RRSP withdrawals earlier—especially in low-income years before CPP/OAS or before large pensions begin—can reduce lifetime tax or future OAS recovery. In other plans, early withdrawals simply accelerate tax unnecessarily. The answer depends on the entire projection.
